ESA BIC Bavaria mentee OroraTech, a spin-off of the Technical University Munich, is developing a constellation of nanosatellites for their global automated wildfire detection system. The satellites are equipped with thermal (infrared) cameras, which measure the temperature of the Earth’s surface. With a planned constellation of 100 cubesats, OroraTech will be able to measure every point on Earth several times per hour. Their first application is focusing on developing an early-warning and analysis tool for wildfires. The future potential for further applications is huge, including precise severe weather warnings, locating urban heat islands and even measuring soil evaporation.
Forbes Magazine is featuring OroraTech in its June 2019 edition “30 under 30”. The full article titled “Aus dem Weltall Feuer löschen” is available online (in German only).
The interview with one of Germany`s leading business newspapers was published in August 2019.
OroraTech entered its one-year incubation programme at ESA BIC Bavaria’s Oberpfaffenhofen location in October 2018.
