We’re pleased to announce that the fourth round of the prestigious EO Excellence Award opened on 5 September 2024.
The EO Excellence Award, presented by the European Space Agency (ESA), is dedicated to honouring early-stage researchers who have made significant contributions to the innovative use of Earth observation data. This award shines a spotlight on those who are pioneering new ways of understanding and leveraging Earth observation to address global challenges and drive scientific progress.
This is your chance to be part of this transformative journey. Whether you’re looking to showcase your groundbreaking research or to recognise a pioneering talent in the field, now is the time.
Submit your nominations and step into the spotlight of excellence in Earth observation.
ESA encourages participation from individual scientists and research teams across Europe. We are committed to fostering diversity and inclusivity, and we strongly welcome nominations from minority groups and underrepresented communities in the field of Earth observation.
Nominations can be made by the researchers themselves, or by a mentor or a supporter. The prestigious awards include research grants of up to 35K Euro for the individual winner and up to 65K Euro for the winning team.
Last year’s winner, Iestyn Woolway from Bangor University, in Wales, UK, is using his research grant to partially fund a 3.5-year PhD, with the remaining costs covered by the university. This is just one example of how the EO Excellence Award can make a tangible impact on the future of Earth observation research.
Reflecting on the success of the last editions of the EO Excellence Award, ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Simonetta Cheli, remarked,
As we embark on this new round, I am pleased to see how the EO Excellence Award continues to foster innovation and support early-career scientists. This award not only highlights the importance of Earth observation, but also empowers researchers to push the boundaries in unique uses of EO data, for science and applications.
The winners of the 2025 EO Excellence Award will be honoured during ESA’s Living Planet Symposium, being held in Vienna, Austria, on 23–27 June 2025. Here, the winners will have the opportunity to present their groundbreaking work to an international audience.
Does your research expand the understanding of Earth observation in new ways? Do you know an emerging innovator who deserves to be recognised?
Then the EO Excellence Award 2025 is your chance to spotlight groundbreaking ideas and outstanding achievements in Earth observation. Don’t miss out on this exceptional opportunity – apply now or nominate a rising star, whether an individual or a team, for one of the most prestigious awards in the field.
